Add to that the doubts and distractions whispering, “Is this even worth it?” and you’ve got a recipe for staying stuck.

But here’s the truth: focus is a skill. And like any skill, it gets easier with practice. You don’t need a perfect environment or endless motivation to get started. You just need a plan. And that’s where these 5 ways to focus come in.

1. Do a Brain Dump: Get It All Out of Your Head

First things first: grab a pen and paper (or your favourite digital tool) and write everything down (this is a lovely journal for inspiration). Yes, everything. Big dreams, tiny tasks, random worries—if it’s swirling around in your mind, get it onto the page.

Think of it like decluttering your brain. You wouldn’t try to organise your wardrobe without first pulling everything out, right? The same goes for your thoughts. A brain dump gives you clarity by taking the chaos out of your head and putting it where you can see it.

Tip:

Don’t overthink this step. Spelling doesn’t matter, and no one’s grading you on neatness. Just write.

2. Give It Definition: Categorise and Prioritise

Now that you’ve dumped it all out, it’s time to sort through the mess. Start by grouping similar items together—business goals, personal tasks, spiritual growth, etc. Once you have categories, prioritise within each one.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this really urgent?
  • Might this be important but not urgent?
  • What can wait for later?

This step is all about separating the must-dos from the nice-to-dos. And remember, not everything needs to be done right now.

Real Talk: Think of this as Marie Kondo-ing your to-do list. If a task doesn’t spark urgency or importance, it can probably wait.

3. Make a Decision: Commit to What You’ll Work On

Here’s where the magic happens: make a decision. Decide what you’re going to work on today, this week, or this month, and commit to it.

Indecision is one of the biggest thieves of focus. It keeps you spinning your wheels instead of making progress. So, stop overthinking and start choosing.

Encouragement for You: It’s okay if your choice isn’t perfect. God doesn’t need your plans to be flawless—He just needs your willingness to move forward. Trust that He’ll guide your steps as you go.

4. Create a Deadline: Time to Get Serious

Ever notice how things magically get done when there’s a deadline? There’s a reason for that—deadlines create urgency and accountability. Without them, tasks tend to drag on indefinitely.

Give yourself realistic deadlines for the tasks you’ve prioritised. And don’t just set them—write them down somewhere you’ll see them daily.

Planning Tip: Deadlines are like speed bumps for procrastination. They slow you down just enough to keep you moving steadily forward.

5. Start Implementing: Action Over Perfection

This is where focus meets productivity: start taking action. Even if it’s small, even if it’s messy, just start. Progress doesn’t come from planning alone—it comes from doing.

Remember, productivity isn’t about doing everything. It’s about doing the right things consistently. And here’s the secret: the more you take action, the easier it gets to stay focused.
